MacGyverlibrarianship, Design on a Dime ... We've Been Super Busy!

Chris and I spent most of our Summer cleaning, purging, scrounging, painting and getting creative! That's just what you do when you have big ideas and small wallets.  Here are the results of our blood, sweat and tears! :)

A fresh coat of paint makes everything pretty!! Our nonfiction section had been missing signage for quite some time. Since it is a pretty big space to fill, we needed something that would really stand out. At the end of last year, we had a huge pile of foam boards donated to us. We traced, cut out and spray painted the letters. We love how it turned out!

We added a design studio to our library this summer. The only thing it was missing…. who am I kidding!?!? It was missing everything! These tables were taken out of an industrial tech classroom and were heading to the “warehouse.” This is where old furniture retires. We decided to snatch it up. Free studio tables! Chris took them to her house and spray painted the legs. We cleaned up the tops, and they were as good as new.

I had no idea how much large cork boards cost! Way out of our “free” price range. So, we decided to make one of our own. We taped together four foam boards, glued on a roll of cork and surrounded it with some cheap base board! Design on a dime!

Before we made our nonfiction letters, the space above the shelves was filled with art work. After hanging our nonfiction sign, we had a lot of canvases to repurpose. We primed and painted them to use in our display case located in the hallway. Matching ribbon and paper clips hold all of the signs on each canvas. We love the way it turned out and it's super easy to change the display!

Oh, chalk markers! How we love you! We added three studio spaces to our library this year; audio, video and design. We also moved our book drop. For days, we brainstormed how we could make really cool signs with very little money. We had used window crayons before, but they didn’t really work out like we planned. We needed something that really stood out! Another staff member suggested chalk markers. They were perfect!! Cheap, easy to use and the colors pop!

Last year we had one Green Screen available for students to use. It became very popular, very fast. We found ourselves turning kids and staff away because it was already in use. We just couldn’t meet the demand. Well, we took care of that this Summer! We painted a green screen wall in our video and audio studios. The green screen that used to be hanging in our old space was moved to the design studio. We also purchased a portable green screen so students could check one out and take it home with them. Now we are up to 4 green screens. We’ll see how that meets demand!

Our library was totally overrun by signs last year. There were so many signs that no one was even noticing them. They just made the library look cluttered.  We decided that this year there would be three designated areas for signs. Our vision was the message boards you see in coffee shops. We scrounged and found two cork boards in our storage room. One of them we decorated to match the existing furniture in the area. The other was ready to hang as is. That left us with one more space, and unfortunately is was a huge space! We filled it with our homemade board mentioned above.
